With the help of Kokayi, they've managed to turn a romantic Cole Porter song into a contemporary something-else-entirely. Our theme is topical, and the releases range from offerings that are new to this moment to outstanding oldies from the '60s, '70s, '80s and aughts: names like Nascimento, Mingus, Marsalis, Toussaint, Staples, and Nyro, along with treasures from lesser-known and emerging artists.

Polly was  a revered member of the San Antonio jazz community for many years, as a performer (she played with just about everybody) and  as a mentor to up-and-comers and newcomers.  She and  drummer-singer Kyle Keener  had a five-decade partnership as the Small World band , gigging everywhere and hosting a virtually unbroken series of yearslong welcoming jam sessions. RIP Hermeto Pascoal - Wizard of Universal Music (June 22, 1936 - September 13, 2025)

Photo credit: Valter Pontes Listen to this week's show Caminhos do Jazz celebrates the life and work of the great  Hermeto Pascoal this week-- "O Bruxo,"  wizard of Universal Music, Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist who Miles Davis named as "one of the most important musicians on the planet" (1936-2025). We'll hear a few of his 2,000+ compositions, cuts drawn from his first commercial recording ( Em Som Maior , Som Maior, 1965) to his last ( Pra Você Ilza , Rocinante, 2024). Sending profound condolences to his loved ones. 💓   As a teaser, here are two clips, both live takes. New Jersey-born, Philadelphia-based drummer Tom Cohen  has  "never been happier about a project than he is about Embraceable Brazil. I was really proud of this producer in me that kind of emerged,” he says. “You just never know what possibilities there are until you try something new. The future is sometimes more open than we think.”  And Brazilian guitarist-singer Roberto Montero has been in on the LA scene for going on three decades, working  live and in studio/film music production .   Todos os Tempos is his first solo outing.
