In the Key of Hanukkah and Christmas...
This week's program is devoted to songs for those who celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas. We begin with Sue Maskaleris' "The Meaning (Peace & Love)," a samba response to Bob Dorough's "Blue Xmas,"
then roll into disks by Jorge Ben, Olivia Hime, Ivan Lins, Maria Bethânia, João Gilberto, Djavan & João Donato, and Emilio Santiago.
The second part of the program is devoted to Hanukkah music, mainly
Sephardic, with selections performed by David Krakauer, Erran Baron Cohen, Yasmin Levy, Kenny Ellis, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Boas
festas, amigos.
And as a bonus, Klezmer Conservatory Band's rendition of "O ir kleyne likhtelekh" (from Oy, Chanukah, Rounder, 1987) is a personal favorite not on today's playlist (YouTube, below)...
