Polly Harrison, San Antonio's Guitar Queen (June 21, 1949 – February 20, 2026)

Photo courtesy of Benedetto Guitars .     Listen to the show      With deep sadness, on this week's show (February 28, 2026) we mark the passing of the immensely talented 7-string guitarist  Polly Harrison ,  who died last week (February 20) on the gig, doing what she loved to do. Polly was  a revered member of the San Antonio jazz community for many years, as a performer (she played with just about everybody) and  as a mentor to up-and-comers and newcomers.  She and  drummer-singer Kyle Keener  had a five-decade partnership as the Small World band , gigging everywhere and hosting a virtually unbroken series of yearslong welcoming jam sessions. Her work was multifaceted and genre-spanning; we lean into her bossa nova and Brazilian jazz playing here.      For more of Polly's story, read Bett But...

RIP Hermeto Pascoal - Wizard of Universal Music (June 22, 1936 - September 13, 2025)

Photo credit: Valter Pontes Listen to this week's show Caminhos do Jazz celebrates the life and work of the great  Hermeto Pascoal this week-- "O Bruxo,"  wizard of Universal Music, Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist who Miles Davis named as "one of the most important musicians on the planet" (1936-2025). We'll hear a few of his 2,000+ compositions, cuts drawn from his first commercial recording ( Em Som Maior , Som Maior, 1965) to his last ( Pra Você Ilza , Rocinante, 2024). Sending profound condolences to his loved ones. 💓   As a teaser, here are two clips, both live takes. The first, from 1976, features Pascoal on flute, with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira , performing  his "Andei" (I Walked)  for a television broadcast.  The second, recorded in Brazil in 1988, features Pascoal on keyboards with Carlos Malta on saxophone, Jovino Santos Neto  at the piano, Itiberê Zwarg on bass, Marcio Bahia at the drums and Fabio Pascoal, Hermeto...
