Circles in a Yellow Room - Mike Freeman ZonaVibe

Listen to this week's show

This week on Caminhos do Jazz, we present Circles in a Yellow Room (VOF Records, 2025), vibraphonist Mike Freeman's new release with his ZonaVibe project. The album features his compositions and performances with Guido Gonzalez on trumpet, Jim Gailloreto on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Ruben Rodriguez on bass, Roberto Quintero on percussion and Joel Mateo on drums. Freeman, who lives in the Hell's Kitchen area of New York City,  meticulously mixed and mastered the recording during the pandemic. The beautiful physical disc package contains his heartfelt and eloquent notes on the lockdown experience, when "everything was totally unknown and eerily unsettling as the normal sounds and life of the city disappeared."

To begin the show, we return to last week's feature, playing a few more selections from trombonist-arranger Ryan Keberle's Choro das Aguas (Alternate Side, 2025), with pianist-arranger Felipe Silveira, bassist Felipe Brisola and drummer Paulinho Vicente.

Check the YouTube (below) for ZonaVibe's performance "El Cuarto Amarillo," an album highlight inspired by his "now grown kids' yellow bedroom, filled with music, art, fun and discovery."
