This week's edition of Caminhos do Jazz is a two-fer... First up is the new disk from Brazilian singer-pianist Catina De Luna and Venezuelan guitarist and arranger-producer Otmaro Ruíz. Lado B Brazilian Project 2 (Sunnyside, 2025) is the second installment of the illustrious duo's B-side project. The project was born in 2015 with the release of Lado B Brazilian Project (Self Produced), which received a Grammy nomination in 2016. The idea was to interpret what we might call Great Brazilian Songbook—classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Dorival Caymmi, Ivan Lins, Ary Barroso and their ilk—but focusing mainly on B-sides rather than greatest-hits and giving them an infusion of LA jazz... The second half of the program continues a well-deserved outpouring of love for our dear departed jazz canary, Sheila Jordan, with selections from Flexible Flyer (Black Lion, 1974) a gloriously off-the-beaten-path recording she made with trombonist Roswell Rudd, pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Arild Andersen and drummer Barry Altschul.

Polly Harrison, San Antonio's Guitar Queen (June 21, 1949 – February 20, 2026)

Photo courtesy of Benedetto Guitars .     Listen to the show      With deep sadness, on this week's show (February 28, 2026) we mark the passing of the immensely talented 7-string guitarist  Polly Harrison ,  who died last week (February 20) on the gig, doing what she loved to do. Polly was  a revered member of the San Antonio jazz community for many years, as a performer (she played with just about everybody) and  as a mentor to up-and-comers and newcomers.  She and  drummer-singer Kyle Keener  had a five-decade partnership as the Small World band , gigging everywhere and hosting a virtually unbroken series of yearslong welcoming jam sessions. Embraceable Brazil & Todos os Tempos: October releases from PA drummer Tom Cohen & LA guitarist Roberto Montero

  Listen to this week's show   Unveiling two October 2025 releases on Caminhos do Jazz this week, both labors of love, self-produced. New Jersey-born, Philadelphia-based drummer Tom Cohen  has  "never been happier about a project than he is about Embraceable Brazil. I was really proud of this producer in me that kind of emerged,” he says. “You just never know what possibilities there are until you try something new. The future is sometimes more open than we think.”  And Brazilian guitarist-singer Roberto Montero has been in on the LA scene for going on three decades, working  live and in studio/film music production .   Todos os Tempos is his first solo outing.
