Sonhos, Pesadelos and an American Tune
Listen to this week's show
Dreams and nightmares this week on Caminhos do Jazz. Performers include Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Nação Zumbi, Music for a While, Jorge Continentino, Lionel Loueke, Alaide Costa, Ben Webster and Bill Charlap. We'll hear Kurt Elling's breathtaking rendition of Paul Simon's "American Tune." The set ends with its seed, Charlap's elegantly simple take on Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's "Somewhere." Time permitting, we'll follow that up with a short take from Dave Brubeck Quartet with Peter, Paul and Mary. Até lá, see you there.
As a bonus, here's Rhiannon Giddens
sitting in with Simon, offering her aptly altered lyric. And, below it, a poignant pandemic video of an adaptation entitled "Because We All Are Brothers," with a lyric by Tom Glazer and Pete Seeger. The tune, a hymn, goes back to the Middle Ages, and there are many other versions, including J.S. Bach's chorale, "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" (BWV 244, Pt. 2: No. 54). We'll leave them to you...
